Your questions answered about tank inspections in the Lafayette, LA area.
Under 40 CFR 112 (SPCC Rule), facilities storing 1,320 gallons or more of oil in aboveground storage tanks (each container ≥ 55 gal) that present a reasonable expectation of discharge into navigable waters—such as the Vermilion River (Bayou Vermilion), which winds through Lafayette Parish before connecting to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and Vermilion Bay—must maintain an SPCC Plan. That plan must include documented inspections of tanks, piping, valves, and containment systems to demonstrate ongoing operational integrity.
Louisiana regulates aboveground storage tanks primarily through the International Fire Code as adopted by the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal under LAC V:55 and R.S. 40:1574–1593, with NFPA standards governing tank installation and operation. Louisiana's LDEQ tank program (LAC Title 33, Part XI) addresses underground storage tanks only; aboveground tanks are therefore governed at the state level by the Office of State Fire Marshal's NFPA-based requirements and, where applicable thresholds are met, by the federal SPCC Rule. There is no state-mandated AST inspector certification or fixed inspection frequency under Louisiana law; inspection content for SPCC-jurisdictional facilities is driven by each facility's own plan under 40 CFR 112. Inspections are commonly performed under STI SP001 (for shop-built tanks) or API 653 (for field-erected tanks).
Genesis Inspection Services works with Lafayette-area businesses throughout Lafayette Parish to deliver certified API 653 and STI SP001 tank inspections, along with the thorough documentation needed to support compliance with EPA SPCC regulations and Louisiana state requirements under the Office of State Fire Marshal.
